Pelham Preservation & Garden Society
Historic Plaque Program is Underway!

Please join your neighbors and fellow
Pelhamites in acknowledging your home’s special place in Pelham’s history by nominating it for an historic plaque.
The Pelham Preservation and Garden Society
(Pelham Preservation) sponsors the Pelham Historic Plaque Program, which places plaques on noteworthy residences throughout
neighborhoods in each village. Anyone who feels his or her home is a good example
of the era in which it was built is encouraged to take part. Certain criteria,
listed below, must be met. An impartial professional from the New York Historic
Preservation Office in Albany chooses the houses each year. At least 10
homes will receive plaques this year, depending on funding availability. Pelham
Preservation provides homeowners with a brass plaque listing historical information about the residence.
The Pelham Historic Plaque Program is
a wonderful way to highlight an important aspect of what makes Pelham so special. The
town’s residential architecture spans several eras and our neighborhoods offer a unique look at historic homes being
adapted to today’s families and lifestyles. Many of our homes have been
carefully cared for and lovingly restored - both in the interior and on the exterior.
Applications
are available by printing the page below or picking up a hard copy at the Town Library. The form is simple
and straightforward.
The criteria are as
follows:
- Houses must be at least 50 years old (1954 or earlier)
- Houses must be within town limits
- Houses must be preserved or restored in an historically-sensitive
manner
- Materials authentic to the period of construction should
be used whenever possible. Any changes should be complementary to the original structure.
Neighbors may nominate neighbors, as long as there is owner
approval. The chosen homes will be announced later this anniversary year.
Pelham Preservation encourages many applications
from a wide range of housing types. Examples of local home styles that may qualify
range from Gothic Revival of the mid-1800’s to Shingle Style from the turn of the 20th century up to examples
of the International Style seen later in the 20th century. The “Pelham
by Design” section of the Town Library includes many books on architectural styles that can help with the application
process. Please join us!
