Best practices to preserve the architectural value of your home

Here are ten great opportunities to help preserve the architectural integrity and value of your home when doing a home improvement project:

  1. Preserve original wood or stucco siding of your house

  2. Maintain a slate or tile roof

  3. Never buy replacement windows

  4. Incorporate important components of vintage kitchens and baths

  5. Avoid refinishing floors and woodwork

  6. Keep historic details

  7. Work with historic landscaping, especially native species such as Mountain Laurel and Rosebay Rhodoendrum

  8. Retain interior plaster walls

  9. Keep historic details on ancillary buildings

  10. Repair, not replace, copper gutters and leaders
